How to Offend Wedding Photographers by Catharine Noble Photography, Lancashire

We recently received a new enquiry about our Wedding Photography services which left us frustrated and disheartened.

"I don't need any editing. I can do that all myself. I just want someone to come, take pictures and then give them to me in their raw format on a usb drive. I couldn't really care less about photos. I'm just not a photo kinda guy. As I say, I don't want any physical prints. I can do all those myself at a later stage. Just want a picture taker and a copy of everything. That's it."

Is this how people view wedding photography? Do people think wedding photographers' are 'picture takers' and not the cherished memory capturing magicians, and artists that we personally adore?

It was one of those situations where you begin to listen to that one negative instead of the thousand positives and I can honestly say that James and I lost sleep over this enquiry! For days we spoke about all the different ways in which wedding photographs are no just special but  precious. We discussed the fact that our clients do want those exceptionally beautiful images, they want our creative flair and the skills we have spent years and years honing.

We spent a lot of time justifying our career, our business, our ethos and along with it that of many other great Photographers. We defended our craft!

Even though photographers feel devalued and unappreciated by these sorts of enquiries, James and I were adamant that not all couples feel this way. Those couples who do love and appreciate our work, the amount of time, blood sweat and tears that we put into capturing their story - they drive us and we go above and beyond to deliver for them!

Those unconcerned photographers who do take on these 'shoot and burn' jobs are doing their clients a huge dis-service and their clients may not fully understand why this is, which adds to the shame. As an industry of professionals we should instead aim to educate clients in the reasons why respectful and trustworthy Photographers work in certain ways - why is this a benefit to them and not just an extra cost.

It is also to the detriment of the wedding photography profession that you will find inattentive photographers who will take on such enquiries. By striving to achieve beautiful images which evoke feelings - the industry grows to be more and more beautiful - and we as an industry provide clients with better work.

The enquiry that at first offended and devalued us and our business, actually made us even more passionate about our work. It made us appreciate our amazing clients we have (both past and present) even more!
